You may know by now that I am a very keen golfer playing off a handicap of 12, here in Solihull, UK. Now I have been playing this game for over 45 years and at MY peak got down to a handicap of 9. Now, like every golfer, we have the inner belief that we can actually play this game a lot better than our handicap suggests.

Why so? Well it’s because we’ve all hit the perfect golf shop at least once every time we go out and play, so that means we should be able to hit the perfect shot every time, right? Wrong!

If only, I wish!

I go to the practice range, I work on my grip, my stance and my posture, and I have an image in my mind of swinging the club like the top pros such as Tiger Woods or Rory Mcilroy.

Before striking the ball I take one more practice swing to make sure that I have set up correctly and then I go for it.

Calamity!

The actual swing is nothing like the one I practiced just a moment ago and the golf ball goes off at a 45 degree angle! Now this is often referred to in golf as a dreaded shank. Strange though, because I’m sure that didn’t just happen in my practice swing, that was perfect, at least so I thought.

Now in golf it is quite difficult to see what is going wrong in your swing for two reasons.

 One is that the swing is extremely quick and is completed in the blink of an eye and

Secondly, the club head is wrapped around your body during the swing and so you are not really able to see the position of the club-head during the swinging motion.

So, a few weeks ago after several months of struggling to fix the problem on my own, I decided to enlist the help of my local trusted PGA golf professional and asked him to wave his magic wand upon me and turn me into a perfect golfer!

He grinned, politely and said “ok, let’s take a look at your swing and just hit a few golf balls for me”.

After a few minutes of studying my swing he remarked that there were a few areas to be addressed and that we should look at each fault in my swing one step at a time.

In other words, there is some work to do here, but he is confident that he will be able to get my swing back on track, one step at a time.

So, lesson one was about my grip on the club. My left hand was placed too far over to the right of the shaft and my right hand was too far under the club. This grip encouraged me to take the club too far back inside my body on the backswing, resulting in an in to out and back in again on the through swing. Get this wrong and it is the start of either a shank shot, or a massive over-draw or hooking the ball.

So, to start the process of getting me on the right track was to get me to move the left hand over to the left so that my thumb is down the front of the shaft and not on the right of it and also to bring the left hand from being under the shaft, to being on the right side of the it.

Whilst the shots I was hitting were not all perfect, I was encouraged by the progress I was making, At this stage he just wanted me to get used to the feel of my new grip (it did feel very strange)
